STORYTELLING #1: The Fundamentals

1.2 Relentless storytelling with Richard Brim

Storytelling at its heart is one of our most basic skill sets.

We tell stories, and we re-tell stories - but one of the most essential things we can do is change and tailor them to fit our audience.

Here, Richard Brim, CCO at adam&eveDDB, talks us through his top-tips from a career of relentless storytelling.

Richard’s top tips:

  • Don’t hide away crafting a masterpiece in secret. Stories are meant to be shared - so do this continuously.
  • Be a relentless storyteller. Retell stories. Over and over and over again. It’s through that telling of the story that things get honed.
  • Read your room. Read the climate. Tell stories that reflect this.
  • Restraints are your friends. Use time constraints as a creative framework and challenge.
  • Don’t follow trends in storytelling. Think about how to make stories your own. Give them their own voices. Find the best way to tell your story.

Richard began his career as an Art Director at RKCR/Y&R later moving to Leo Burnett and CHI&Partners. After joining adam&eveDDB in 2013 he was responsible for the multi award-winning 2013 Christmas campaign 'Sorry, I Spent It On Myself' for Harvey Nichols. Rick was promoted to ECD in 2014 and later CCO. Under his creative leadership the agency has been awarded 7 Grand Prix over the last three years, as well as Campaign Agency of the Year for three consecutive years. He was also awarded second best parent in the Brim household for the seventh year running but he hopes to change that.
